      1.      Colorful Start to 2014 Planned at Times Square - The sign, made by lighting company Philips, will light up the "14" in multiple colors using 207 LED bulbs which have more than 16 million color options each. A global TV audience of over one billion viewers is expected to watch this year's New Year's Eve Times Square celebration.

2.      NEMA Publishes ANSI_ANSLG C78.901-2013 American National Standard for Electric Lamps—Single-Based Fluorescent Lamps—Dimensional and Electrical Characteristics -ANSI_ANSLG C78.901 sets forth the physical and electrical characteristics required to assure interchangeability and to assist in the proper application of single-based fluorescent lamps. Single-based compact fluorescent lamps, both self-supporting and those requiring auxiliary support, are specified. 3.      Luminaire Manufacturing Industry Valued at $10 Billion - IBISWorld’s Lighting Fixtures Manufacturing Market Research Report (NAICS 33512), published in October 2013, provides an analysis of the commercial and residential luminaire industry. Valuing the industry at $10 billion in sales, the report forecasts growth due to healthy prospects for residential construction and government intervention driving demand for energy-efficient lighting. 5.      NEMA Reports LED A-Lamp Shipments Increased 71.9% in 3Q13 - NEMA’s index for LED A-line replacement lamps increased for the second consecutive quarter in Q3 2013. Shipments rose 60.2 percent on a year-over-year basis. Halogen A-line lamp shipments improved as well, eclipsing the level during the same period last year by 140.7 percent. Sales of incandescent A-line lamps returned to positive territory during the quarter, following declines in the previous three quarters, advancing by 16.2 percent. However, the index declined 14.8 percent versus Q3 2012. The index for CFLs dipped on both a quarterly and annual basis, declining by 2.8 and 11.2 percent, respectively. www.nema.org

6.      Demand for Lighting Equipment Slips During Third Quarter - NEMA’s Lighting Systems Index subsided from a five year high posted in the previous quarter, decreasing by 1.6 percent on a quarter-to-quarter (q/q) basis during 2013Q3. However, demand remains robust compared to a year ago. On a year-over-year basis, lighting equipment shipments improved for the fourth consecutive quarter, increasing by 4.7 percent. Miniature lamps were the only component of the index in positive territory, while fixtures, emergency lighting, large lamps and ballasts declined q/q. www.nema.org

8.      LED Phosphor Intellectual Property (IP) LED Phosphors and Down-Converters Patent Investigation Report 2013 - Phosphor IP is a major force in the LED industry. 10.  Ford to Debut C-Max Solar Concept Car at Consumer Electronics Show - Ford plans to unveil at this month's International CES gadget show a solar-powered concept car that offers the same performance as a plug-in hybrid but without the need for a plug. The C-MAX Solar Energi Concept car uses a gasoline engine combined with a gizmo that acts like a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun's rays on the vehicle's roof-mounted solar panels. The automaker says the vehicle's estimated combined city-highway mileage is 100 mpg. 1/02 LA Times

1.      2013 ENERGY STAR Products Partner Meeting – Cancelled Due to the Government Shutdown -


2.      $10 LED Price War Heats Up the Lighting Market - Earlier this year, Cree dropped the price of its 40-watt equivalent (6-watt) warm-white LED bulb to less than $10. The incumbents were watching and have answered.

  • Philips at Home Depot selling its 60-watt LED equivalent for $9.97 after utility rebate. Also at Staples. For regions without a utility rebate available, its 10.5-watt is $10.97. 
  • Wal-Mart is selling its line of Great Value LEDs for $8.88 for a 60-watt-equivalent.  
  • Wal-Mart will also offer a new dimmable 60-watt equivalent by GE for $11.  
  • GE is also selling its Reveal LED for about $20 at other retailers.  
  • Ikea said last year it would only sell LEDs after 2016


3.      LED Products and Building Partners Wanted for All High-Efficacy Project - California’s current Title 24 requirements for building energy efficiency call for some high-efficacy lighting in a limited number of residential space types, such as kitchens and bathrooms. CLTC http://cltc.ucdavis.edu is working with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) and Davis Energy Group (DEG) to develop specifications for residential lighting packages that will consist entirely of high-efficacy LED lighting products. 4.      DOE Publishes Updated SSL Manufacturing R&D Roadmap - The Roadmap complements the SSL R&D Multi-Year Program Plan that guides the Core and Product Development R&D programs. One of the goals of the Roadmap is to guide the Manufacturing R&D program and help direct funding solicitations for it. 5.      Hubbell Lighting Launches Create Change Upgrade Program for Commercial Buildings - Commercial buildings represent over 80 billion square feet of space in the U.S. and consume 36% of all electricity, making them one of the largest generators of greenhouse gases. Hubbell Lighting announced a new solution to cut electricity costs, enhance the quality of light and reduce the financial risk of upgrades–resulting in up to a 3% increase in net operating income while at the same time improving the property value and attractiveness for tenants. 6.      NEMA Publishes Annual Standards and Products Guide - The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published the 2014 edition of its Electrical Standards &  Products Guide (ESPG), a comprehensive listing of NEMA electrical standards as well as an extensive directory of manufacturers and their products. 7.     Lighting Systems Index Gains Continue During Second Quarter - NEMA’s Lighting Systems Index posted a modest increase of 2.4 percent on a quarter-to-quarter basis during the second quarter of 2013. This quarterly advance marked the LSI’s third consecutive increase. On a year-over-year basis, lighting equipment shipments climbed 4.9 percent. 8.      NEMA Publishes ANSI C136.25 Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Ingress Protection (Resistance to Dust, Solid Objects, and Moisture) for Luminaire Enclosures - ANSI C136.25 details the requirements for ingress protection of luminaires in roadway and area lighting equipment. While these requirements are suitable for most types of lighting, it should not be assumed that all listed degrees of protection are applicable to a particular type of equipment. 9.      High Rebates for High Bay Fixtures - Whether replacing antiquated T12HO systems or inefficient HID systems, installing fluorescent, pulse start metal halide, LED or induction high bay fixtures can bring in high rebates. 11.  New Construction Can Get Rebates Too - New construction programs often base the incentives on the savings over a building code, most commonly a version of ASHRAE 90.1. 13.  Energy Department to Award $100 Million for EFRCs - The DOE currently funds 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers, which were selected for five-year funding in 2009. With support for those centers set to expire in July 2014, DOE has announced a competition for a second round of funding. The competition will be open to proposals both from existing EFRCs seeking renewal of support and from institutions seeking to establish new EFRCs under the program. Universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and private firms are eligible to compete and are encouraged to form multi-disciplinary research teams that may include partnerships with other institutions. 1.   One World Trade Center Gets Spire, Bringing It to Its Full, Symbolic 1,776-Foot Height - Now that the 408-foot spire is atop One WTC, the building is the tallest in the United States. The 408-foot spire, weighing 758 tons, will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna. An LED-powered light emanating from it will be seen from miles away and a beacon will be at the top to ward off aircraft. 2.    DOE Report Estimates LED Savings in Common Lighting Applications - The U.S. DOE has released a report analyzing markets where LEDs compete with traditional lighting sources (e.g., incandescent and fluorescent). The report, “Adoption of Light-Emitting Diodes in Common Lighting Applications,” provides estimates of current energy savings, plus potential savings if these markets switched to LEDs overnight. Nine markets were analyzed: four indoor lamp applications (A-type, directional, MR-16, and decorative); three indoor luminaire applications (downlight, troffer, and high-bay); and two outdoor luminaire applications (streetlight and parking lot/garage). http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/publications/pdfs/ssl/led-adoption-report_2013.pdf


3.    NEMA Publishes ANSI/ANSLG C78.43 - NEMA, on behalf of the American National Standard Lighting Group (ANSLG), published ANSI/ANSLG C78.43, “American National Standard for Electric Lamps - Single-Ended Metal Halide Lamps.” This standard sets forth the physical and electrical requirements for single-ended metal halide lamps operated on 60 Hz ballasts to ensure interchangeability and safety. The standard also provides the basis for electrical requirements for ballasts and ignitors, as well as the lamp-related requirements for luminaires. 4.      Shaheen-Portman Bill Approved by Senate Energy Committee - The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (S. 761) was appreoved by a bi-partisan voice vote.  The bill now moves to consideration by the full Senate.  The Shaheen-Portman bill will spur the use of energy efficiency technologies in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.   Of course the measure can’t become law unless it is approved by the U.S. House of Representatives along with the Senate. http://www.ase.org/resources/summary-energy-savings-and-industrial-competitiveness-act-shaheen-portman

  • Everlight is specifically targeting standard and omni-directional retrofit lamps and light bars for linear applications with the new 62-217D family of mid-power LEDs.
  • LG Innotek has been supplying LEDs more into the backlighting market in the past but intends to make a major push into general illumination. In the mid-power area, the company has qualified LEDs to LM-80 across a range of 50 to 280 mA drive currents.
  • Philips Lumileds used LFI to makes its first push into COB arrays. The company had focused on smaller point sources that allow for better beam control. But many solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturers find a single COB LED array much easier to work with, prompting Lumileds' entry. 
  • Samsung has realized 129-lm/W efficacy in its COB LED products. 13W, 26W, and 40W LEDs are offered across a range of 2700K to 5000K with a CRI of 80. It also announced a high-efficacy mid-power product that it said at the time was the most efficient on the market at 160 lm/W.
6.      The Top 10 Cities for Green Jobs - Here are the top cities for green jobs right now, according to job aggregator site SimplyHired.com  The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines green jobs as those in businesses that produce goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources, as well as jobs in which workers’ duties involve making their establishment’s production processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources. 9.      How to Select a Lighting System Designer - Most lighting-system consultants have specialties. As such, prospective clients would be well-advised to inquire about a consultants’ pertinent experience. But there’s more to it than that, as is explained in a guidance document, “ How To Select a Lighting-System Designer ,” available for free on the National Lighting Bureau (NLB)'s website. 10.  Special Assessments Allow Businesses to Finance Energy-Saving Upgrades - The project is one of four being funded this year though a special assessment district set up by the city of Ann Arbor, MI that allows businesses to get long-term, lower-cost loans to make energy improvements. including lighting, insulation, heating and cooling systems, reducing water use and adding renewable energy sources, such as solar and geothermal. Kerrytown Market & Shops is replacing lighting fixtures, adding occupancy sensors to storage rooms and offices and installing light switches in areas that didn't have them so lights are not on continuously.  5/06 Detroit Free Press

11.  City Energy Benchmarking Law Provides Real Benefit - Last year, Philadelphia joined a growing number of cities—including New York, Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington—that have adopted laws requiring commercial building owners to gather and report data on energy use in their buildings. Though Philadelphia is still developing final regulations for what is known as the Energy Benchmarking Law, the law applies to any building with 50,000 square feet of interior, commercial-use space. Building owners will need to collect data (including from tenants) on electric, oil, natural gas, steam, and water usage, and upload that data into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Portfolio Manager system. 5/09 Philadelphia Business Journal

12.  Detroit Lighting Authority to Get First $600,000 Next Week - The authority will get $600,000 on May 15 and another $600,000 in both June and August. The authority, approved by council in February, is charged with crafting a new plan to better illuminate the city as key to improving public safety. 5/06 Detroit Free Press
