1.      ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2010 Now The National Energy Standard - On October 18, 2013, all states were required by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to put in place a commercial building energy code at least as stringent as the 2010 version of the ASHRAE/IES 90.1 energy standard. States are expected to adopt 90.1-2010 in whole or in part; adopt the 2012 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (which references 90.1 as an alternate compliance standard); or, like California, develop their own unique code.  http://lightingcontrolsassociation.org/. 2.      Bright Lights, Big City: NYC Swapping All 250,000 Street Lights to LED - New York City will be seen in a whole new light over the next few years, as an effort to switch 6,000 miles of streets and 12,000 miles of sidewalks to LED street lights continues. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced all of the city’s 250,000 street lights will be changed over to light-emitting diodes in a four-year initiative. In addition to Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, LEDs have been installed along the FDR Drive, along Central Park’s pedestrian paths and on the “necklace” lights that adorn the cables of East River bridges, according to the city. 5.      Cree, Philips Lumileds, and Luminus Devices eExtend COB LED Technology - All made recent chip-on-board (COB) LED technology announcements that in aggregate span increased lumen output in both small and large LED packages. Cree announced a brighter LED with a 23-mm light-emitting surface (LES) and a new 30-mm part in the CXA family. Lumileds announced a 10% gain in performance across its entire COB line. And Luminus Devices entered the COB segment for the first time with its Xnova family charting a new path to serve general solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. http://ledsmagazine.com/news/10/10/16

8.      This Little LED of Mine - Manufacturers concede that early versions of the compact fluorescents did not meet expectations for light quality and longevity. Despite advances that have improved their performance, consumers still tick off a host of complaints about the squiggly bulbs: They take time to light up, they do not dim smoothly, they don’t fit with clip-on shades and, worst of all, they cast a harsh and unflattering light.       9. Obituary: Lutron’s John McKiernan Passes Away – It is with great sadness that I report the passing on Monday, Oct. 21 of my very good friend John F. McKiernan, 79, Lutron’s Vice Chairman of the Board.  He was a fun guy with the gift most Irishman have, that is to tell the best stories. 1.      OLED Luminaires to be a $6.3B Market in 2017 - Industry analyst firm NanoMarkets has announced the release of its latest report, "OLED Lighting Market Forecast Q2 2012." In the report NanoMarkets presents its outlook on the OLED lighting sector with some notable changes since its last release in 2011. The firm notes concerns with the current economic situation in Europe which is a major center for OLED lighting as well as changes in manufacturing that will dampen prices in the short term but open the door to wider acceptance of the technology as OLED lighting efficiency, panel size and light output improvements bring the technology to the mainstream. 2.      Despite Naysayers, Green Energy Keeps Growing - All together, solar PV, wind and biofuel markets expanded by 31 percent last year to $246 billion globally, according to Clean Edge’s 11^th annual edition of Clean Energy Trends 2011, a wrap-up of key green-energy indicators. The expansion caps a five-year run during which these markets have grown by roughly a third each year. Clean Edge expects the markets to grow steadily--albeit more slowly--in the decade to come. 3.      ASHRAE Has Been Asked to Review The U.S. GSA’s Standard P100 - Facilities Standards for the Public Buildings Service http://www.gsa.gov/graphics/pbs/2010_P100_Final.pdf. This standard establishes design standards for new buildings, major and minor alterations, and work in historic structures for the Public Buildings Service (PBS) of the General Services Administration (GSA). This document now contains both performance based standards and prescriptive requirements to be used in the programming, design, and documentation of GSA buildings. ASHRAE would like to receive your comments on this draft. 4.      Plastic Bottles Light Up Thousands of Homes in the Slums of Manila - Plastic bottles have become a sustainable way to light many homes in poorer sections of Manila in the Philippines, where many houses are built too close to each other to allow for windows, CNN reported. For many residents electricity is unaffordable or unavailable, forcing them to work and live in the dark. But a new project has shined a light in the darkness - literally.  Based on an invention by an engineer from Amy Smith, an engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the recycled plastic bottles are filled with water and bleach and then fixed into holes on the roof. The bottle bulbs then refract the sun's rays to create 55-watts worth of light. 5.      Luminus R&D and Testing Lab Accredited for Testing LEDs to LM-80 Standard - Luminus Devices, Inc., manufacturer of Big Chip LEDs™, announced that its Boston-area R&D and Testing Laboratory has been accredited to conduct testing on LEDs to the LM-80 standard, the approved method for measuring LED light sources. The accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is awarded by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), and the standard is endorsed by the Department of Energy and the Illumination Engineering Society (IES). 9.      Chattanooga Seeking 'Green' Lighting Compromise - The city may make one more push toward trying to break a stalemate on how many "green" streetlights to install across Chattanooga. The City Council is considering a rollout of 26,000 lights--at a cost of $18 million--with the city floating three bonds over three different years. The City Council reached a stalemate Tuesday night on the best option to pay for the lights and how many to either buy or lease.  The administration brought forth a resolution to spend $6 million on 5,200 lights to cover downtown and some key streets.
