1.      New World Trade Center Serves as Model for Urban Energy Efficiency - In the wake of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center (WTC) on Sept. 11, 2001, New York City officials and building planners set out to rebuild the complex to greater heights–and greater energy efficiency. The new World Trade Center complex will feature a stunning array of energy-efficient design techniques and America’s most innovative, energy-efficient technologies. 2.      Strategies Unlimited Projects $3.7 Billion LED Retrofit Lamp Market in 2016 - Strategies Unlimited has published a new report entitled "LED replacement lamp market analysis and forecast" that projects a global LED-retrofit-lamp market that exceeds $3.7 billion by 2016. The growth in solid-state lighting (SSL) products intended for existing sockets is from a $2.2 billion base in 2011, and the firm projects an annual 30% growth in the number of units sold. According to the report, there were 39.9 million SSL A19-lamps sold globally in 2011. 3.      Verification Testing Guidance for Luminaires - The ENERGY STAR specification for luminaires is now effective and certified luminaires will start being subject to verification testing administered by EPA-recognized certification bodies (CBs). In preparation for that testing, the U.S. EPA is planning to issue to CBs the attached guidance that provides additional direction for conducting verification testing of luminaires. This guidance limits the verification testing to core performance criteria and also establishes the sample sizes needed to verify product performance. EPA plans to finalize this guidance on April 16, 2012. 4.      NEMA Publishes NEMA WD 7 Occupancy Motion Sensors Standard - Previously published as a guide and not a standard, WD 7 promotes uniformity for the definition and measurement of characteristics relevant to the use and application of occupancy motion sensors. This standard covers the definition and measurement of field of view and coverage characteristics relevant to the use and application of vacancy and occupancy sensors using individual or any combination of passive infrared, ultrasonic, or microwave technology. 5.      Siemens Osram Light Unit Said to Plan First China LED Plant - Siemens AG  which is seeking to sell shares in its lighting subsidiary Osram this year, is drafting plans for its first production plant for light-emitting diodes in China. Osram has given the go-ahead for the project and is negotiating which parts of LEDs and related components it will produce in the country.The facility would fill a gap for Osram in China, the world’s largest lighting market at $10.6 billion. Osram now only has production sites for the semiconductor-based technology in Regensburg, Germany and Penang, Malaysia. 4/03 Bloomberg

6.      Energy Savings Version 2.0 - From water heater jackets to programmable thermostats and LED lighting, the number of home improvement products that fall under the energy-efficient umbrella is ever expanding. Many dealers and manufacturers say that lighting products have amplified this movement.  3/30 HCN

7.      $54M Big Dig Light Fix Called ‘Permanent Solution’ - A $54 million proposal to replace the more than 25,000 fixtures in the Big Dig tunnels is being touted by MassDOT officials as a “permanent solution” to fix the corroded lights inside the problem-plagued underground highway and ramp system. The project, slated to begin this time next year pending the MassDOT board’s approval of a bid, would replace the corroding fluorescent fixtures that crashed into the spotlight in February 2011 after a 110-pound fixture fell in the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel with a complete overhaul to energy-saving LED lights. 4/05 Boston Herald

11.  Mild Winter May Have Artificially Inflated Jobs Data, Economists Fear - Economists say the mild winter has artificially inflated job growth. February alone stole as many as 72,000 positions from March and future months, according to Macroeconomic Advisers. Translation: The surge in hiring early in the year may not be as strong as it appeared. On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the job market slowed in March as employers expanded payrolls by 120,000 jobs, falling short of expectations.  Forecasts for the nation’s gross domestic product during the first quarter hover around 2 percent.  However, economists seem to agree that the fundamentals of the recovery are solid, yet slow. 4/07 Washington Post

13.  China Lighting Source Industry Report, 2011-2012 - In 2011, China lighting appliance industry produced 19.61 billion electric light sources (up 4.0% year on year), including 4.17 billion incandescent light bulbs (a 3.8% yr-on-yr rise) and 3.32 billion fluorescent lamps (down 1.40% from a year earlier). 1. Strategies Unlimited Forecasts LED Revenue Growth of Nearly 10% in 2011 - Falling LED prices and a reduced demand for LED-backlit TVs will result in a slower growth rate for LED revenues this year compared with 2010, according to Strategies Unlimited. The high-brightness LED market is projected to grow by 9.8% year-on-year in 2011, reaching $12.3 billion in revenues. LED revenues grew by a remarkable 108% to $11.2 billion in 2010, propelled by applications in TV backlight units. However, expanding supply and a slowdown in overall TV demand in 2011 led to a drastic drop in LED prices, and a slower rate of growth in total revenues. LED revenue is expected to peak in 2014 at $16.2B and then fall to $15.3 B in 2015. The dip in revenues will be temporary, as lighting will take over as the engine for growth after 2015. Survey: Few Aware of Energy Efficiency Incentives - A new survey indicates that few consumers are taking advantage of tax rebates and incentives for energy efficiency upgrades on appliances, light bulbs, air conditioners and other items. St. Louis-based Emerson commissioned Harris Interactive to perform the study in recognition of October as National Energy Awareness Month. More than 70 % of respondents said they did not take advantage of rebates, tax holidays or other incentives. 10/3 AP

A New Use for LEDs: Mind Control - “Biological specific lights,” tuned so as not to interfere with an individual’s normal production of melatonin, the hormone secreted from the pineal gland linked to sleepiness, could begin to hit the market in about two years, according to Mr. Fred Maxik, a founder of the Lighting Science Group With a biological bulb, you could read at night without experiencing the nagging irritability that can occur after using a computer or sitting close to a lamp near bedtime. Industry experts and executives suggest that efficiency will become a Trojan horse for a host of unexpected and arguably more valuable applications. Energy Conservation Kits Now Available to Maryland Customers of Potomac Edison - Potomac Edison, a FirstEnergy company, will begin promoting Energy Conservation Kits and educational materials to its Maryland residential customers as part of the company's programs to meet Maryland energy efficiency requirements through the state's EmPower Maryland program. 7. New Qualified Light Fixture Products List - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would like to inform partners and stakeholders of a new, consolidated ENERGY STAR qualified light fixture list. This new list includes products qualified to the Residential Light Fixtures specification (RLF), the Solid State Lighting (SSL) Luminaires specification and the Luminaires V1.1 specification. 9. Rising From the Ashes of 9/11 - Ten years have passed since the devastating terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and while we will never forget the events of that day, the scars are healing. Construction is underway on One World Trade Center, which towers 80 stories high, on the site known as Ground Zero. It is already the tallest building in Lower Manhattan and is rising at a rate of about one story per week. The worldwide high-brightness (HB) LED market leaped from $5.6 billion in 2009 to $10.8 billion in 2010, a growth rate of 93%, according to market research firm Strategies Unlimited. The total market is expected to reach $18.9 billion in 2015, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8%. LCD monitor and TV backlights led the growth spurt, followed by mobile display applications. Ten companies accounted for more than 75% of the HB-LED market. Several paths led to this impressive growth. Samsung LED, Seoul Semiconductor, and LG Innotek rode the boom in the LCD TV and monitor backlight market. Osram rode the rise of the Chinese HB-LED market, especially in the automobile sector. Lumileds’ success in high-power backlight products, cell phone flash, and architectural lighting contributed to much of its success. Cree’s dedicated focus on lighting ensured its continued strong position in the solid-state lighting revolution.

Meanwhile, Chinese LED suppliers captured two percent of the market. While Chinese HB-LED technologies are currently three to five years behind the rest of the world, Strategies Unlimited expects that huge investment in the SSL industry by 2015 will help close the gap. Investments of $17.4 billion have been announced for 2010-2015, and government subsidies and policies are helping companies to buy MOCVD systems, as well as driving initial adoption, for example in street lights.

Applications

Mobile products remained the biggest application HB-LED in 2010, with 39% of the market, while backlights for TVs and monitors accounted for 33%. Lighting and automotive both accounted for 8%, signs were 6%, and other applications comprised the remaining 6%.

While LCD television/monitor backlights accounted for the largest part of the jump in HB-LED revenue in 2010, mobile applications were also significant contributors. In particular, the large rise in PC notebook sales and the penetration rate for LED backlights used in notebooks doubled HB-LED revenue over 2009.

Strategies Unlimited expects television and monitor backlights to continue to be a strong engine for growth in the next two years, and then flatten out in 2013. The CAGR for backlighting is expected to be more than 16% from 2010–2015.

LED luminaire design, rather than LED performance, was the primary concern for the lighting market in 2010. HB-LED component revenue for lighting was $890 million in 2010.

Solid-state lighting will become the key market driver in 2014 because of the worldwide focus on energy efficiency and the phase-out of incandescent bulbs. The forecast CAGR for HB-LED components for lighting from 2010–2015 is 39%.
